Alabama Motocross Track Conditions After Rain

The forecast says rain and everybody starts texting. Here is what actually happens to this track when it gets wet, and how to find out before you drive.

Rain Is Not Automatically The End Of The Day

Sandy loam sheds water rather than sitting in it. A shower that would close a hardpack track often does very little here, and a damp track with grip in it is a lot of fun to ride. Do not write the weekend off because you saw a rain icon on your phone.

Why This Surface Handles It

The mix is Alabama red clay cut with wood shavings. Clay on its own goes greasy when it is wet and sets hard when it dries out. The shavings break that up - they hold moisture without turning the surface to slop, and they help the water move through rather than pooling on top.

It is the same property that keeps the track from turning into a dust bowl in August. A surface that holds water sensibly in the heat is a surface that lets water go sensibly in the wet.

When A Day Does Get Called

Sustained heavy rain is different from a shower, and safety comes before a race programme. When a day is cancelled, postponed or carrying a weather notice, we say so - it goes at the top of every page on this website, on the schedule page, and on our Facebook page.

How To Check Before You Drive

  • Look at the top of any page on this site. A notice shows there sitewide.
  • Check the schedule page, where the notice sits with the event itself.
  • Check our Facebook page.
  • If you are still not sure, ring the park. That is what the number is for.

One phone call before you hook up saves a wasted trip. We would rather take the call than have you drive an hour and turn round.
